Goal 1

Develop graduate periodontists who are competent with diagnosis, treatment planning, therapies and maintenance of periodontal diseases and dental implants, using classic and current literature to support decision-making.

  • Objective No. 1: Develop graduate periodontists who are competent with diagnosis, treatment planning, therapies and maintenance of periodontal diseases and dental implants, using classic and current literature to support decision-making.
  • Objective No. 2: To provide the resident with an in-depth knowledge of relevant basis/biomedical sciences as they relate to the theory and practice of periodontics and oral implantology.
  • Objective No. 3: To provide the resident with formal and informal opportunities to present, discuss and defend their clinical patient care cases with periodontology faculty and other graduate periodontology students.
  • Objective No. 4: Develop graduate periodontists competent in developing long-term supportive periodontal therapy of periodontal and implant patients.

Goal 2

Develop graduate periodontists competent in adult minimal enteral and moderate parenteral sedation.

Objective No. 1: To provide the student/resident with an in-depth knowledge in areas of minimal, moderate and deep sedation as prescribed by the ADA Guidelines for Teaching Pain Control and Sedation to Dentists and Dental Students.

Goal 3

Develop fundamental research skills and an interest in and understanding of periodontal research in order to evaluate the peer-reviewed scientific literature relevant to periodontology.

  • Objective No. 1: To train the resident in fundamental of research methodology, study design, biostatistics, data organization and analysis, scientific writing, and presentation.
  • Objective No. 2: To provide students/residents with the opportunity to conduct and publish research.

Goal 4

Prepare graduate periodontists to become board certified as diplomates of the American Board of Periodontology.

  • Objective No. 1: To provide the resident with the credentials to enter the board process with the knowledge and skills to become board certified.
  • Objective No. 2: To provide the resident with the motivation and support to successfully complete the board certification examinations offered by the American Board of Periodontology. 

Goal 5

Prepare graduate periodontists to integrate other specialties with optimal comprehensive dental care, and to work in cooperation with general practitioners and physicians.

Goal 6

Encourage professionalism, service to the community, pursuit and preservation of knowledge, and dissemination of ideal health standards to patients.
