Biography

Dr. Alissa Smethers graduated with a BS in biology from Juniata College. She competed an MS in nutrition and coordinated dietetic internship program at Marywood University. She then worked as a clinical dietitian at the Raritan Bay Medical Center in New Jersey for two years, providing medical nutrition therapy to patients living with a wide range of diseases.

Dr. Smethers competed her PhD in nutrition at The Pennsylvania State University where her research focused on childhood obesity prevention with an emphasis on portion size and energy density. Her doctoral work yielded four peer-reviewed journal articles and several prestigious awards from leading scientific societies, such as the 2018 Ethan Sims Young Investigator award from the Obesity Society. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, PA, where she was awarded an F32 fellowship from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders to investigate sweet taste phenotypes and biomarkers among mother-child dyads.

Dr. Smethers is also actively involved as a board member with the Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Philly Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Dr. Smethers teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in nutrition and is the field placement coordinator for the MPH in nutrition program at Temple.
