Biography
Dr. Krista Schroeder is a nurse scientist whose overarching career goal is to contribute to better health outcomes among populations that experience trauma-related health inequities. She works to do so by conducting research focused on alleviating effects of traumatic exposures on health, as well as by providing trauma-informed patient care in communities that experience health inequities. Her early research focused on how social determinants of health influence preventable disease risk. Findings from that work led her to focus her current research on how traumatic experiences, such as violence or sexual assault, serve as social determinants of health. Much of her work has been supported by large funders such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She has formal training in several advanced quantitative methods (e.g., spatial statistics, longitudinal data analysis, multi-level modelling, causal inference, and Bayesian modelling) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Her studies leverage those methods by taking a population health approach that employs geospatial analyses and large multi-level datasets to illuminate the effects of trauma at individual, social, and environmental levels. Her research is directly informed by her experiences engaging with patients in Philadelphia, where she maintains active clinical practice as a critical care nurse at a safety net hospital and serves as an on-call sexual assault nurse examiner for the city’s sexual assault clinic. Dr. Schroeder completed a BSN at Bloomsburg University, a PhD and NIH T32 pre-doctoral fellowship at Columbia University, a NIH T32 postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, and a Graduate Certificate at Temple University’s Department of Geography and Urban Studies. Currently, she is an Associate Professor of Nursing (Tenured) at Temple University College of Public Health.
