Program Outcomes

Urban bioethics graduates will be prepared for successful careers in a variety of areas, and past graduates have used their degree to gain employment with public health departments, to bolster an application to a PhD or other advanced degree program, to successfully compete for competitive residencies and fellowships, to publish in the bioethics literature, and to serve on health systems ethics committees.

Professional Development

Students are invited to an in-house series of events for their professional development, including preparing for networking at academic conferences, conference abstract preparation, and presentation skills development.

Careers

Because bioethics is an interdisciplinary field, there is an incredibly wide range of personal goals that bring people to the program and careers for which a master’s in urban bioethics provides additional preparation.

Urban bioethics graduates who are in medicine or other clinical care fields report that they bring a more advanced skill set for the ethical navigation of complex care, particularly when patients are unfortunately impacted by negative social and structural forces. They are more satisfied as providers and their patients have better outcomes for their ability to navigate social and structural constraints on health. All graduates leave us better equipped to be successful advocates for minoritized populations in their work and spheres of influence.

Career Services

While the Urban Bioethics MA program does not have dedicated career services, the program’s large multi-disciplinary faculty serves as advisors for students with aligned goals. Dual degree students utilize the services of their primary professional or graduate program. The program actively connects current students to alumni who can provide additional guidance tailored to a student’s individual professional and personal careers goals.

Advising

Urban Bioethics students have a dedicated advisor who works with students on course selection and registration, connecting students to relevant academic and professional resources, and supporting students in selecting a thesis topic and advisor.

Students receive personalized advising and support from their thesis advisor as they research and write their thesis as the degree's culminating requirement. Core and affiliated faculty are available to advise students as they plan for their next academic, professional or personal steps.
