During their time at Katz, medical degree candidates can pursue additional areas of interest though our dual degree programs: MD/PhD (science research); MD/MA in Urban Bioethics; and MD/MBA (Master of Business Administration).

Benefits of the dual programs include the following.

Efficient scheduling: The programs are arranged between the medical school and the related degree-granting school to make scheduling efficient.
Comprehensive studies in both disciplines: The curricula are not integrated, which means students will complete all curricular requirements of each program.
Two locations: Students pursuing any of the dual master’s programs can enroll at either the St. Luke’s campus or the North Philadelphia campus.

Candidates interested in the dual degree MD/graduate degree programs (MD/MA, MD/MBA) and in the MD/Certificate in Narrative Medicine apply for acceptance to the other programs after acceptance to the MD program. Candidates complete applications for their desired program and are evaluated using the procedures and criteria of that program’s admission process.

The MD/PhD program offered by the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University provides the opportunity to obtain expertise in clinical medicine and become broadly trained in basic science research at an institution noted for excellence in teaching and research. The program is comprehensive, demanding and challenging, and thus attracts bright, highly motivated individuals drawn to a research career in academic medicine.

Curriculum

The first two years of the program include four laboratory rotations to establish a solid research foundation. In subsequent years, students concentrate on one of five areas within the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program for their doctoral research. For the final two years, the student returns to medical school for clinical training.

Program Requirements

The academic requirements for admission to the MD/PhD program are high and include the following.

Meeting the requirements for admission to the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University
Demonstration of high quality scientific preparation
In most instances, research experience of at least one year prior to admission to the program
Outstanding letters of recommendation
Acceptance by the MD/PhD program committee

Application Process

Applicants are responsible for submitting a completed AMCAS application and MD/PhD application. Since official academic records and MCAT scores will have been sent by the originating sources to the medical school admissions ciommittee, we do not require this information to be submitted directly to the MD/PhD committee. Requests for both the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and MD/PhD supplemental applications will be sent by TempleMedOnline following receipt of verified AMCAS applications by the Admissions Office at Katz. Applicants are strongly encouraged to have at least one letter of reference that can specifically comment on the applicants research experience.

Review of Applicants and Selection of MD/PhD Students

MD/PhD students are selected from a pool of applicants directly to the MD/PhD program, all of whom must submit a separate application for admission to the MD Program. Close coordination and cooperation exist between the medical school admissions committee and the MD/PhD program committee, which also serves as the admissions committee for the MD/PhD program. In addition, students may be recruited from the first-year Katz School of Medicine class.

The criteria for admission for the MD/PhD applicants from the general applicant pool are based upon those currently in use for regular admission to the MD program. Overall GPA and MCAT scores should be significantly higher than normally required for Katz admission. The applicant's academic background must demonstrate exceptional research or scholarly interest and experience.

The MD/MA in Urban Bioethics Program is a unique opportunity for Katz students to engage in a program focused on health equity in clinical care, research and policy. 

Offered through Temple’s Center for Urban Bioethics, this interdisciplinary program prepares students to better understand and address the ethical challenges experienced in urban communities where density, diversity, and disparity contribute to health inequities. Coursework is grounded in theoretical and analytic bioethics as well as in methodological tools for community engagement.

The MA can be completed concurrently with medical school courses with no additional time necessary to complete both degrees. Scholarships are available for MD/MA students.

MD/MBA Program

Offered jointly by the Katz School of Medicine and Temple’s Fox School of Business, this dual degree program allows students to enroll in online master of business administration (MBA) business courses any time during medical school. No additional time is necessary to complete the MBA coursework. Applicants benefit from special tuition scholarships and an expedited MBA application process that includes a GMAT waiver.

The Online MBA program begins with a five-day orientation residency on campus, during which students complete their first course and engage in networking, professional development, technology training and team-building activities. Dual degree students will complete 36 credits of core MBA coursework, with nine elective credits awarded to the MBA program upon successful completion of the Doctoring 1 and 2 courses.

Fox online classes meet over five, seven, 10 and 15 weeks. While all prerecorded course content is available 24/7 in a mobile-friendly format, Fox Online MBA students dive deeper into business topics by attending live web conferencing classes. Finally, an integrative capstone experience allows students to demonstrate, in a real-world setting, that they have mastered the knowledge and skills that today’s healthcare and business environments require.
